Day 7 of the Move

by sjett969  •  November 15, 2009

The morning crew picked up where we finished the night before. A few touch ups on the mats were made. And then off to getting the floor back together. The next court was outlined on top of the court already made, while final calculations were made on how many tile go where.

The first court put together was built in the center of the gym (because of the BB court on it). The easiest way to build the court is from top to bottom and right to left. Therefore we decided to build the top row all the way to the wall for the first court. 6 Blue, 7 Tan, 6 Blue, and then the other court. Once the top row was down, to work we went. We layed, stomped, kicked, and carried tiles until court 1 was together! YA YA

While court one was being layed, court 3 was being layed out on the original court. Workers from court 1 came over to help with court 3 and before we new it the gym had 3 GREAT looking courts!

Day 6 of the move

by sjett969  •  November 15, 2009

After such a great job by the metro crew in previous work days, Metro's crew took a break while the tile layers came in to put in the new floor (the new tile floor that is). After a day the tile from the entrance to the office and meeting area had been laid! It looks AWESOME! Like always the Metro M was laid at the entrance giving a pretty big statement that "THIS IS METRO!!!"

On Day 6 of work starting bright and early once again. The rubber mats needed to go down in order for the courts to go down the next day. One by one the mats were laid down and rolled out. One team laid tape on the floor side and the other team taped rubber mats together. Roll after roll, tape after tape, the floor was slowly covered for the first 3 courts to be laid tomorrow. This was an all day process as the AM crew left, the afternoon crew was slim, but then quickly revived by the Evening crew. ...read the rest of this post →

Day 5 of the Move

by sjett969  •  November 12, 2009

Day 5:

Today went by pretty quickly, with just a few things on the to do list.

To Do:
New Gym
Paint 2nd coat of lower wall
Finish spraying the brick wall white

Old Gym:
Finish taking down score boards and anything within reach of the sky-lift.
Once again, a nice crowd showed up to paint the rest of the lower 2nd coat. Hannah and I jumped on the sky lift and finished the second coat on the brick wall!

The old gym crew got all of the score boards down and remaining banners.

We are ahead of schedule and get tomorrow and thursday off! The construction workers will be coming in to lay tile! We are all very excited to see how it looks!

Day 4 of the Move

by sjett969  •  November 10, 2009

Today's goals: Paint the lower half of the gym walls...easy enough!

Although this sounds pretty simple, there is a little more to it. Try going around the entire gym, trying to tape of a perfectly even line at 7'4"! Once the plan was decided on how to accomplish this task. Mr. Obar and I were ready to go to work. Mr. Obar would attach the laser level and then with precise placement the blue tape was on.

While we got started Katie, Jitka, Adam, Jim, The Headricks, and a few others, finished prepping the lower half of the walls for paint. Hannah did an excellent job of bringing the radio and getting it set up!

Day 3 of the Move

by sjett969  •  November 7, 2009

With many volunteers giving up their Sat. am... the work continued at Metro's old facility breaking down the entire gym.

Truck after truck was loaded with sport court, poles, nets, and rolled mats. The crew did suck a great job of breaking down and stacking tiles that the carts girls were very busy back and forth from loading and unloading. With all the hard work the gym had a bare concrete floor in no time!

With the job done around 10am that was scheduled to take till noon, the workers redirected the hard work to packing up the pro shop, kitchen, halls, and the biggest chore bringing stuff down from storage.

Again job well done and accomplished before noon. With the last board removed from the wall the lights were shut off and a sigh from the sight of the gym that just had tryouts a week ago!

Sunday we are off and then time for some color in the new facility on Mon.

Day 2 of the Move

Day 2

With one day of prepping, painting, and sky-lift driving under our belt, the Metro Crew put some of these construction workers to shame!

Once again we started the day off bright and early! Before we could continue with painting all of the fire hydrants had to be removed as well as all of the stickers and sticker residue, sounds easy.. try removing stickers 28ft in the air leaning over the lift...

We set out again in teams, one responsible for sanding the puttied walls smooth, one removing the stickers, while the 3rd began painting once again.

In the new gym there is a metal ladder that leads to the roof that had to stay, in order to save paint the decision was made to hand paint the ladder! Well I for sure was not up to the challenge, but Emma one of our awesome volunteers climb right up and knocked the ladder out! Very impressive! ...read the rest of this post →

Day 1 of the Move

by sjett969  •  November 7, 2009

Day 1:

A handful of workers led by Mr. Jim, started bright and early working on Metro's new facility.

After Jitka worked out a few safety issues with the contractors, we all set out with   broom in hand and began to sweep the once warehouse walls. After a brief sky-lift driving course two teams of two set out on each wall to sweep from ceiling to floor. Up and down we went, sweeping wall to wall to prepare for the paint.  After the first wall was completely clean and taped off, it was time to PAINT!! The first spray was on, and before you knew it we had one beautiful CREAM wall!!

....Lunch break!.... Subway!

Mr. Keith did a brilliant job of priming the brick portion of the wall, while those who were not on the lift grabbed a spackle and mud and began to fill wholes on the bottom portion of walls.  ...read the rest of this post →
